Play this quick Home Assessment Checklist as a game in which everyone can participate. Keep track of your score and do the assessment again in a few months.
Instructions: Find a piece of paper and a pen or pencil to write down your points. Use a clock or stop watch and begin with the following tasks. Add or subtract points accordingly. Good luck and have fun!
Open your refrigerator and in one minute, count out the different types of fruit and vegetables. Add one point for each. For example, add one point for apples 1. , one point for celery, one point for carrots, etc.
2. Are there stairs in your home or building? If so, as a family walk up and down the stairs as many times as you can in one minute. Add one point for each time your family goes up and one point for each time your family goes down the stairs.
3. Have everyone in your family grab 3 items out of the cabinet and bring them to the table. As a family, locate the food labels on each item. Subtract one point for each item that has high fructose corn syrup. Add one point for each item that lists whole grain as an ingredient.
4. How many televisions and computers are in your home? Give your family one point for each television or computer if it is currently turned off.
5. Over the past week, did you eat a meal together as a family? If so, add one point for each family meal. Give yourself a bonus point if the meal was healthy (low in fat, low in salt and sugar.)
Tally up the family’s total points and discuss ways to improve the health of your home over the next week and month. Be sure to take the Health Assessment again to see if your score improves!
