Port Sulphur YMCA

WELCOME BACK - You Belong Here!

Dear valued member of the YMCA family,

When you join the YMCA, you belong to much more than just a gym.  You belong to a movement that began locally in 1852; an organization committed to supporting the development of our community’s youth; a place where seniors can remain healthy, happy, and independent; a place where people of all ages feel supported and loved and where all family members can be active together.  During the current crisis, your YMCA has been busy providing meals to children (over 25,000 as of this week), cleaning facilities, connecting with members via social media, and completing major maintenance projects on our buildings.

There is still much we do not know about the coronavirus, but one thing has become clear – the people who have been most adversely affected by the virus have been people who have underlying health conditions.  The CDC recently reported that 90% of people hospitalized due to the virus had some underlying health condition.  These conditions include high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, lung disease and cardiovascular disease – all things the YMCA works to prevent or mitigate every single day we are open.  Never has good nutrition and exercise been more essential to the American people.

It has been almost two months since we closed our doors to help combat the spread of the coronavirus.  Now, we want to give you an update on our plans for reopening our YMCA facilities and bringing back programs.  We will reopen as soon as we are allowed to open and have staff available to follow the guidelines which will make YMCA activities as safe as possible.  While we are still waiting to receive more information on these guidelines and an opening date, these are some of the things you can expect to see at your YMCA:

  • A phased, gradual reopening and return to membership and program activities.
  • Additional and continuous cleaning of our facility and screening of members.
  • A list of protocols members will need to follow to promote their own safety and the safety of others around them.

When we closed our doors in March, we stopped all scheduled membership payments.  We did that in anticipation that many of our members would be hurting financially from the shutdown.  However, like all member supported organizations, we need to have revenue in order to survive.   We are hopeful we will be able to start our phased reopening in the second half of May, and we anticipate resuming membership payments on June 1st.  If you feel as though you and your family are not ready to return, you can place your membership on hold by contacting one of our membership service representatives.  If you are continuing to endure economic hardship from the shutdown, we will also have financial assistance available to help keep your membership active so you can continue to benefit from all the YMCA has to offer to you and your family.

I doubt you’ll find many health and wellness organizations prepared to do so much to help keep you active and healthy, but that is part of what makes the YMCA who we are.  We care about you, we care about your health, we care about your family, and we care about your neighbors.  Please trust us when we say “You belong here!
