Hurricane Ida Response

Hurricane Ida: Responding to the Needs of our Community

The YMCA of Greater New Orleans is here to support our community in times of crisis.

Before, during, and after Hurricane Ida’s devastation, and together with government and other non-profits, we are working to aid in our region's recovery. To date, that support includes:

  • Distributing sand bags at our Buras YMCA prior to hurricane landfall.
  • Housing community members at our West St. Tammany YMCA during the storm.
  • Welcoming hard working utility crews to our West St. Tammany YMCA and offering them a safe place to shower, cool down, and charge electronic devices.
  • Providing nutritional support to the community at large. During the week of September 6th the YMCA of Greater New Orleans served 8,000 meals!
  • Supporting vulnerable community members. Our staff reached out, remotely and in-person, to our members who might need extra help with establishing communication with their loved ones, taking their medication, find food and water, and removing debris.
  • Supporting families: Our East Jefferson YMCA is providing childcare options with “Hurri-Camp” until our local schools reopen.

Our neighbors in the highly impacted areas of South Plaquemines are returning home. With 3 locations throughout Plaquemines Parish, the YMCA of Greater New Orleans is able to serve as a hub for this hard-hit community's relief efforts.

  • At the Buras and Port Sulphur YMCAs, our doors are open to provide cooling, showering, charging, communal gathering, and to distribute mold remediation and cleaning supplies.
  • We are currently working with local government, schools, and non-profit agencies in an effort to convene groups, coordinate efforts, and confirm resources in order to aid in sustained, long-term recovery.
  • The Buras Y partnered with Convoy of Hope, Besh Restaurant Group, and a private donor to distribute 250 meals, cleaning supplies, and baby items including diapers and formula. FEMA and the Blue Roof Crew were also present and provided computer stations to help individuals access online recovery resources.
  • The Port Sulphur Y hosted the United Way, helping them distribute gift cards, water, MREs, cleaning solution, masks, and a boxed meals donated by Cochon Butcher.
  • The Belle Chasse Y's Disaster Relief Drive collected and distributed essential recovery supplies to highly-impacted community members. Items included mops, bleach, disinfectant, trash bags and bins, gloves, masks, and ladders.
It can take years for our most vulnerable community-members to fully rebuild and recover after disasters like Hurricane Ida. The YMCA of Greater New Orleans is committed to continuing its recovery efforts for as long as needed.

Our donors and community partners make all of this possible. To support our long-term recovery efforts, consider making a donation using the button below. Remember, any amount can positively impact a family in-need!

Please click on the purple donate button to give. Any amount helps as we work together to recover, rebuild, and revive. Thank you!
