Lifeguard Certification

EARN MONEY. BE A LEADER. SAVE LIVES

We use the American Red Cross training course to certify our lifeguards. They learn CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, basic first aid, how to prevent incidents, and how to recognize and respond to emergencies in the pool and on the deck.

American Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguard Certification - Water less than or equal to 6 feet

Upon successful completion of the course you will receive a Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguard Certificate. This certificate is good for 2 years. The YMCA of Greater New Orleans would accept this certificate as a prerequisite for employment as a lifeguard.

Course Prerequisites:

•Must be 15 years of age or older before the start of the course.

•Complete a Swim-Tread-Swim Skill Sequences in which participants must jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 50 yards. After swimming 50 yards, maintain your position at the surface of the water without support for two minutes by treading using only your legs. After completing the two minutes, swim 50 more yards.

•Timed Event: Swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10 pound object from the bottom of 5 feet of water, return to the surface, walk or swim back to the starting point, and get out of the pool without the ladder or stairs. This must be completed within 50 seconds.

• Complete and produce the certificate of completion for the pre-course blended online learning session. This will be sent out a week prior to the beginning of the course and takes approximately 5-6 hours to complete.
